The short answer
A full bathroom renovation in Calgary in 2026 typically runs $10,000 to $50,000, and most mid-range main-bath projects land between $15,000 and $25,000. Small powder rooms sit at the bottom of that band; large ensuites with custom tile, a freestanding tub and a glass shower sit at the top.

Where the money goes
Bathrooms are small rooms with every trade in them, which is why they cost what they do. Labour is typically 40–60% of the budget: tile setting, waterproofing, plumbing and electrical all happen in a few square metres. Material choice matters less than the amount of tile work and whether fixtures move.
- Tile and waterproofing: the largest labour item, and the one worth paying for properly
- Plumbing: moving a drain costs far more than moving a tap
- Vanity and fixtures: the easiest place to control spend
- Glass: a custom shower enclosure is a four-figure line item on its own
- Ventilation: an undersized fan is the most common cause of mould we find in Calgary bathrooms
The one thing people regret cutting
Waterproofing. A tiled shower is only as good as the membrane behind it, and a failed shower pan means tearing the whole thing out. We build showers with a proper waterproofing system, slope the pan correctly and seal the niche, because that is the part of a bathroom that decides whether you are doing this again in six years.
Permits and timeline
Replacing fixtures in the same positions usually needs no permit. Adding or moving plumbing, and any new basement bathroom that wasn't roughed in by the builder, generally requires a plumbing permit: see the Calgary permit guide. Expect two to four weeks on site for a main bathroom.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Calgary?
Most mid-range main bathrooms run $15,000 to $25,000 in 2026. Powder rooms start lower, and large ensuites can reach $50,000.
How long does a bathroom renovation take?
Usually two to four weeks for a main bathroom. Tile, waterproofing cure times and glass measurement set the schedule, and rushing any of them is how showers fail.
Is it cheaper to convert a tub to a shower?
Not always. A conversion means new waterproofing, often a new drain position and custom glass, so it usually costs more than replacing a tub with a tub.
Do I need a permit for a bathroom renovation in Calgary?
For a like-for-like refresh, generally no. For new or relocated plumbing, electrical changes or a new basement bathroom, yes. We tell you which applies before we start.
Can you do two bathrooms at once?
Yes, and it is usually cheaper per room. We stage the work so you always have one bathroom in service.
