What hail really does to each
Calgary sits in Hailstorm Alley, and the 2024 storm alone produced more than 130,000 insurance claims and over $3 billion in damage. Hail treats these materials differently. Vinyl is the most likely to crack, and it cracks more readily when it is cold, which is exactly when Calgary storms sometimes arrive. Engineered wood dents but tends to hold together. Fibre cement is the toughest of the three and is non-combustible as a bonus.
That said, hail damage on vinyl is usually an insurance matter, not a personal expense, and vinyl panels are the easiest and cheapest to replace. The practical question is less "which survives hail" and more "what do you want to be doing after the next storm". See our hail damage and insurance claims page.
What chinooks do
Calgary's freeze-thaw swings are harder on cladding than steady cold. Materials expand and contract constantly, which is why fastening and spacing matter as much as the product you pick. Vinyl must be hung, not nailed tight, so it can move; fibre cement needs the right fastener pattern and gapping at butt joints. Most siding failures we are called out to in Calgary are installation failures, not material failures.
Which should you choose?
Choose vinyl if
You want the lowest cost, zero repainting, and you are comfortable claiming hail damage when it happens.
Choose engineered wood if
You want deep board-and-batten or wood texture at a middle price, and you don't mind repainting eventually.
Choose fibre cement if
You are staying long term, want the best hail and fire performance, and the higher up-front cost fits the budget.
Mix them
Common and sensible: fibre cement on the hail-facing and street-facing walls, vinyl elsewhere.
Talk to your insurer first
Alberta insurers now price hail risk aggressively: hail can account for a large share of a Calgary home premium, and deductibles have moved from the old $1,000 standard to $2,500–$5,000 in many policies. Before you decide, ask your broker whether impact-resistant exterior materials change your premium or deductible. Sometimes the answer makes the upgrade pay for itself; sometimes it doesn't, and it is a five-minute phone call either way.
Frequently asked questions
Is fibre cement siding worth the extra cost in Calgary?
If you plan to stay in the home ten years or more, often yes: it lasts 40 to 50 years, handles hail better and is non-combustible. For shorter horizons, quality vinyl is usually the better value.
Does vinyl siding crack in Calgary winters?
It can. Vinyl becomes more brittle in deep cold, which is why installation technique and careful handling in winter matter so much.
Can I replace just the damaged side of my house?
Yes, and insurance claims often cover exactly that. The one caution is colour matching: older vinyl fades, so a new panel can look different. We check this before committing to a partial repair.
Do you install James Hardie products?
We install fibre cement siding. Ask us which product lines we are quoting and we will put the exact manufacturer and line in your written estimate.
How much does each option cost on my house?
We quote more than one material on the same measurements so you can compare like for like. See siding cost ranges for the ballpark.
